Gun Violence: The Facts

9 out of 10 Americans agree that we should have universal background checks, including 3 out of 4 National Rifle Association members. The NRA and its deep-pocketed supporters have thwarted effective, common sense gun control measures in the United States leading to these grim statistics:

  • More than 30,000 Americans killed by homicides, suicides and incidental killings each year.*
  • Over 75,000 are injured by gun violence annually.**
  • One child or teen dying from a gun every three hours and eighteen minutes, making gun violence the second leading cause of death in youth ages 1-19.*
  • 1,190 firearm deaths occurred in Michigan, surpassing the number of traffic deaths in the state in 2013.**
  • 16,334 people were shot unintentionally.**

Despite these grim and sobering statistics, meaningful gun violence prevention legislation continues to be thwarted by politicians influenced by powerful lobbies with deep pockets.
